Other chromatographic modes provide complementary information that reverse-phase separation may not capture. Ion-exchange chromatography separates peptides by net charge and can resolve deamidated, oxidized, or truncated variants that co-elute under hydrophobic conditions. Size-exclusion chromatography detects aggregates and higher-order oligomers, which are often invisible in reverse-phase assays. Chiral chromatography can quantify D-amino acid epimers when stereochemical purity matters. Because each mode uses a different separation principle, a single purity number from one method cannot describe all possible impurities.
Interpreting chromatographic purity requires attention to detection limits and response factors. Peptides without aromatic residues may absorb weakly at 280 nm, so 214 nm is often preferred, but mobile-phase additives and solvents also absorb at low wavelengths. Co-eluting impurities with different molar absorptivities can produce area percentages that differ from mass percentages. Integration parameters, peak tailing, and baseline choice further affect reported values. For these reasons, method details belong alongside any purity figure, and orthogonal methods are needed to confirm identity and impurity profiles.
Peptide purity specifications describe the minimum acceptable result from a defined test. A certificate of analysis may list HPLC purity, mass spectrometry identity, appearance, and counterion content. Specifications are method-dependent, so a value obtained with one gradient or wavelength may differ from another. For research use, common thresholds include 95% and 98% by RP-HPLC, but the appropriate limit depends on the application. The specification should always name the analytical method and acceptance criterion.
Quality control includes system suitability, blank injections, and reference standards. System suitability checks column performance and retention time reproducibility, while blank runs detect carryover or mobile-phase contaminants. Reference standards help calibrate retention time and detector response. Without these controls, a purity value is difficult to compare across laboratories or over time. Documentation of instrument settings and integration parameters is also part of quality control, and acceptance criteria should be set before samples are analyzed.

Purity results are only meaningful when linked to a defined sample and method. A certificate of analysis typically lists the analytical technique, column type, gradient, detection wavelength, and integration parameters. It may also report mass confirmation, water content, and counterion composition. For research peptides, laboratories often request the raw chromatogram rather than only a summary percentage. This allows independent review of baseline, peak shape, and any unresolved shoulders that might be missed by a single number.
Stability testing examines how purity changes under controlled conditions. Samples are stored at defined temperatures, such as -20 °C or -80 °C, and analyzed at intervals. Lyophilized powders are generally more stable than solutions because water promotes hydrolysis and aggregation. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can also degrade peptides, especially those with oxidation-prone residues. Accelerated studies at elevated temperature provide useful comparisons, but they do not always predict long-term behavior at lower temperatures.
Handling practices influence measured purity. Peptides may adsorb to plastic or glass surfaces, particularly when hydrophobic or positively charged. Weighing hygroscopic powders can introduce water and alter concentration. Dissolving in appropriate solvents and using low-binding tubes can reduce losses. Each laboratory should validate its own procedures because recovery and stability vary with peptide sequence, formulation, and container material. Open questions remain about how best to standardize stability reporting across different peptide classes.
Quality control for peptides begins with a documented specification that states the required purity, identity, and appearance. Suppliers often release research-grade material at 95% or greater by HPLC area, but this threshold is not universal. A certificate of analysis typically records the lot number, sequence, test methods, and measured values. The document allows a user to compare batches and to trace deviations. Specifications should match the intended use rather than a generic label.
Storage and handling conditions affect both peptide stability and the accuracy of later purity tests. Lyophilized powders are commonly kept desiccated at -20 °C or below, while reconstituted solutions require a defined buffer, pH, and temperature range. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can promote aggregation, oxidation, or hydrolysis over time. Each cycle may alter the chromatogram and complicate comparison with earlier results. Stability data, when available, should guide handling intervals and solvent choice.
Peptide purity testing sits within a broader quality control framework. Release testing commonly includes appearance, identity, purity, peptide content, counterion content, water content, and residual solvents. Elemental impurities and microbiological attributes may be examined when relevant to the manufacturing route. Pharmacopoeial monographs and general chapters provide methods and acceptance criteria for some peptides, but many research-grade materials are not covered by such standards. Method validation establishes specificity, linearity, accuracy, precision, range, and robustness for each test.
Handling practices strongly affect measured purity and sample integrity. Many peptides are hygroscopic, susceptible to oxidation, or prone to adsorption on glass and plastic surfaces. Lyophilized powders are typically stored desiccated at -20 °C or below, while solutions may require colder storage and minimized freeze-thaw cycles. Peptides containing cysteine, methionine, or tryptophan can degrade through oxidation or disulfide exchange. Working aliquots reduce repeated exposure to moisture and temperature fluctuations during routine analysis.
=== Second World War === The TA's war deployment plan envisioned the divisions being deployed, as equipment became available, in waves to reinforce the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) that had already been dispatched to Europe. The TA would join regular army divisions when they had completed their training. In 1938, it was envisaged that this would take at least eight months from mobilisation. In fact, with mobilisation in September 1939, the first three TA divisions arrived to take their places in the front line by February 1940: the 48th (South Midland) Division, 50th (Northumbrian) Division and 51st (Highland) Division. In April, they were joined by five more, 12th (Eastern) Division, 23rd (2nd Northumbrian) Division, 42nd (East Lancashire) Division, 44th (Home Counties) Division and the 46th Division, making eight of the thirteen British divisions deployed, although three, 12th, 23rd, and 46th, were deployed, minus much of their equipment, and dubbed 'labour divisions' to be used for infrastructure work. In practice, all of the divisions were heavily engaged in the fighting. The 42nd, 44th, and 48th took part in the stand on the River Escaut, The 50th, 42nd, and 46th were chosen for the final stand at the perimeter of Dunkirk, despite the 46th being one of the digging" divisions with few anti-tank guns and artillery pieces.
On 3 December 2004, the twentieth anniversary of the disaster, a man falsely claiming to be a Dow representative named Jude Finisterra was interviewed on BBC World News. He claimed that the company had agreed to clean up the site and compensate those harmed in the accident, by liquidating Union Carbide for US$12 billion. Dow quickly issued a statement saying that they had no employee by that name—that he was an impostor, not affiliated with Dow, and that his claims were a hoax. The BBC later broadcast a correction and an apology. Jude Finisterra was actually Andy Bichlbaum, a member of the activist prankster group The Yes Men. In 2002, The Yes Men issued a fake press release explaining why Dow refused to take responsibility for the disaster and started up a website, at "DowEthics.com", designed to look like the real Dow website, but containing false information.
==== United States ==== As of 2023, 38 states, four territories, and the District of Columbia allow medical use of cannabis (in which THC is the primary psychoactive component), with the exception of Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. As of 2022, the federal government maintains cannabis as a schedule I controlled substance, while dronabinol is classified as Schedule III in capsule form (Marinol) and Schedule II in liquid oral form (Syndros). On 18 December 2025, President Donald Trump issued an Executive Order titled "Increasing Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research", directing the DEA and FDA to reclassify medical marijuana. To that end, on 23 April 2026, the Department of Justice issued an order to immediately reclassify medical cannabis as a Schedule III controlled substance when dispensed by state-licensed cannabis dispensaries to individuals with a state issued medical marijuana card. The DEA is in the process of conducting expedited public hearings to address the broader rescheduling of all cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III, with the hearings scheduled to begin 29 June 2026. This rescheduling makes medical marijuana legal for medicinal use when obtained from licensed dispensaries, and once the broader rescheduling is complete, should allow it to be prescribed by licensed physicians who are also licensed by the DEA to prescribed controlled substances. However, as it is still a controlled substance, diversion for recreational use will still be illegal under federal law.

==== Synthesis in Yoctoreactor ==== The yoctoreactor method introduced by Hansen et al. is based on the geometry and stability of a three-dimensional DNA structure that creates a yoctoliter (10−24 L) size chemical reactor in which proximity of BBs brings about reactions among them. The DNA oligomers comprise the DNA-barcode for the attached BBs and form the structural elements of the reactor. One kind of yoctoreactor format is shown in the figure.

=== Relative utilization === Due to experimental limitations BV is often measured relative to an easily utilizable protein. Normally egg protein is assumed to be the most readily utilizable protein and given a BV of 100. For example: Two tests of BV are carried out on the same person; one with the test protein source and one with a reference protein (egg protein).
The energy required to transform B, C, N, Si, and P from nonmetallic to metallic states has been estimated as 30, 100, 240, 33, and 50 kJ/mol, respectively. This indicates the proximity of boron to the metal-nonmetal borderline. Most of the chemistry of boron is nonmetallic in nature. Unlike its heavier congeners, it is not known to form a simple B3+ or hydrated [B(H2O)4]3+ cation. The small size of the boron atom enables the preparation of many interstitial alloy-type borides. Analogies between boron and transition metals have been noted in the formation of complexes, and adducts (for example, BH3 + CO →BH3CO and, similarly, Fe(CO)4 + CO →Fe(CO)5), as well as in the geometric and electronic structures of cluster species such as [B6H6]2− and [Ru6(CO)18]2−. The aqueous chemistry of boron is characterised by the formation of many different polyborate anions. Given its high charge-to-size ratio, boron bonds covalently in nearly all of its compounds; the exceptions are the borides as these include, depending on their composition, covalent, ionic, and metallic bonding components. Simple binary compounds, such as boron trichloride are Lewis acids as the formation of three covalent bonds leaves a hole in the octet which can be filled by an electron-pair donated by a Lewis base. Boron has a strong affinity for oxygen and a duly extensive borate chemistry. The oxide B2O3 is polymeric in structure, weakly acidic, and a glass former. Organometallic compounds of boron have been known since the 19th century (see organoboron chemistry).
In April 2013, Hird, as coach, was accused of being personally injected with supplements in 2011 and 2012 that would be deemed performance enhancing if he were a player. Essendon players from 2011 and 2012 were also accused of ingesting performance enhancing supplements. As head coach, Hird was subsequently implicated. Following months of rumours and investigations, on 13 August 2013, Hird, along with the Essendon Football Club, senior assistant coach Mark Thompson, football manager Danny Corcoran and club doctor Bruce Reid, was charged by the AFL with bringing the game into disrepute in relation to the poor governance of the supplements program at the club in 2011 and 2012. The club was given 14 days to consider the charges and faced an AFL Commission hearing on 26 August 2013. On 27 August 2013, following much negotiation, Hird accepted charges that he had brought the game into disrepute and abandoned possible Supreme Court action against the AFL and its chief executive, Andrew Demetriou. He maintained that he did little wrong, but said he should have known more about the club's supplements program. He was banned from working at any AFL club in any capacity for twelve months commencing from 25 August 2013. Hird was allowed to attend Essendon matches as a spectator during this period. However, despite not being allowed to pay him for working as a coach during 2014, the club paid Hird $1 million in advance for 2014 in December 2013. A media report on 3 October 2013 said that Hird denied pleading guilty for a reduced charge as alleged by Demetriou.

HPLC purity measures the relative area of the main peptide peak compared with all detected peaks under one set of separation and detection conditions. It is an operational value rather than an absolute mass fraction. Compounds that do not absorb at the detection wavelength or that co-elute with the main peak are not counted.
The peptide bond absorbs ultraviolet light near 214 nm, so this wavelength detects the backbone of most peptides regardless of aromatic content. It is more universal than 280 nm, which mainly detects tryptophan, tyrosine, and phenylalanine. Mobile-phase components can also absorb at 214 nm, so blank subtraction and method controls are important.
No single chromatographic method resolves all possible peptide impurities, because variants may differ in charge, size, hydrophobicity, or stereochemistry. Deamidated and oxidized forms may co-elute in reverse-phase systems, while aggregates require size-exclusion separation. Orthogonal methods and mass spectrometry are therefore used together for a fuller impurity profile.
It is a document reporting test results for a specific lot, often including appearance, HPLC purity, mass identity, and storage conditions. It should identify the analytical method and acceptance criteria. The certificate describes the tested sample, not necessarily every vial.
